Purley Walcountians 1 Spencer 5

PURLEY Walcountians suffered their heaviest defeat of the season to table-topping Spencer last Saturday.

Coach John Oliver and other volunteers had helped to shift a foot of snow off the pitch on Friday and their efforts appeared to be paying dividends when Purley took an early lead through 18-year-old Keith Turner, newly signed from East Grinstead.

Having scored with a drag flick from a short corner, Turner then hit the bar from another short. John Jaunty twice squandered one-on-one chances for the hosts.

Spencer fought back to level and went 3-1 up in the second half.

As Purley chased the game, the visitors hit them on the break, scoring twice in the last five minutes to put a gloss on the scoreline.

Oliver said: "It wasn't really a 5-1 game and the score doesn't reflect the performance. But fair play to Spencer who were an excellent team."
